The Marching Saxons
Marching Band and Color Guard

With 140 members, the 2018 Marching Saxons were the largest marching group in Langley High School history.  The 2018 show, Birds of a Feather, was particularly meaningful for this group as it celebrated all that can only be accomplished by everyone working together.  By the end of the season, the Band had earned the first Superior rating for a Marching Band in Langley HS history, and set the stage for the Langley Bands' selection as a Virginia State Honor Band, also a first in Langley history.

The Langley Marching Band program is relatively new.  In 2015, the Marching Saxons participated in their first marching competition in the 50-year history of the school, performing at the James Madison University Parade of Champions.  That same year, the Marching Saxons debuted their new uniforms, their first marching band uniforms in school history.

In 2016, the Marching Saxons won First Place and Best General Effect in their class at the Marine Corps Invitational at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis.  Continuing their momentum in 2017, the band won First Place in their class, sweeping the caption awards for Best Music, Best Visual, Best Overall Effect, Best Percussion, and Best Color Guard at the Virginia Showcase of Bands at Herndon High School.  At the North Stafford Invitational in 2017, the band won Third Place in their class, picking up Second Place for Music and Color Guard and First Place for General Effect.

Most recently, the Marching Saxons impressed the audience and judges alike at the First Annual Colgan Classic on September 22, 2018.  Taking Second Place overall in their division, they also received second place honors for Music, Color Guard, and General Effect. The following week, on September 29, the band performed at the NOVA Regional Showcase of Bands at Herndon High School, where they again took Second Place and Best General Effect in their division.

In addition to performing with the Marching Saxons at football games and competitions, the Color Guard performs as a Winter Guard, which participates in indoor Winter Guard competitions throughout Northern Virginia.

Marching Saxons Make School History at 2018 State Assessment!!
In Mr. Martin's own words:
CONGRATULATIONS to your Marching Saxons for their HISTORIC 2018 season-ending performance at the VBODA State Marching Festival! They gave the strongest single performance any Langley marching band has EVER given, earning and receiving a Superior rating (the highest rating available) from all seven judges. This means that, for the first time in school history, the Marching Saxons received an overall rating of superior.

To say I am proud of the students' accomplishment is a massive understatement. They have earned this distinction through weeks, months, and even years of hard work and heart. They have been led by an extraordinary staff of dedicated instructors. They have been assisted invaluably all season long by some incredible parent volunteers. And they have stood on the shoulders of the previous Langley marching bands which worked so hard to get us to this point. But mostly, the students did this, through their own caring and commitment. This whole season, capped by this extraordinary performance, was a reflection of the theme of the show - we are strong when we unite to a common purpose, and dedicate ourselves to a common goal.
